Observations from the Coffee Shop 7.8

One thing the protests in Egypt, Brazil, and Turkey, actually protests anywhere, have in common is the prodigious use of American made tear gas. Sometimes I look at photos from these protests and I wonder something. I wonder how it feels to go to work somewhere in the U.S. and make the tear gas that governments seem to fire with abandon. Do you honestly feel like you're doing something constructive? Protecting freedom maybe? I don't understand it at all.

With all the news about this or that Republican anti-abortion bill it's easy to lump them all together as a Republican 'War on Women' and politically that may be true but in the wider world it all starts to look like good old fashioned sexism. I'll give you a few examples.

Of the 320 most expensive artworks sold in auction between 2008 and 2012 only 1 was created by a woman. In Stone Harbor I was talking about this with a gallery owner, I shall refrain from saying who, and her response was that "galleries are in the business of making money and the perception is that works created by men will be worth more than those created by women." The owner is in no way shape or form a Republican.

When Marissa Mayer became CEO of Yahoo writers and pundits everywhere claimed it was just another sign of how women had broken though the 'glass ceiling' in the tech world. Well in 1985 37% of computer degrees went to women while today only 18% of them do and only 19% of the country's programmers are women. In Silicon Valley a woman only makes 47 cents for every dollar a man makes.

Last week NASCAR announcer and former driver Kyle Petty, who at one time was my dad's favorite driver, said of Danica Patrick; "She can go fast, but she can't race. I think she's come a long way, but she's still not a race car driver. And I don't think she's ever going to be a race car driver." I suppose this means it doesn't take a 'race car driver' to lead the Indianapolis 500 or win the pole for the Daytona 500, one only has to go fast. In his defense I must say Petty did win 8 whole races in his 30 year Sprint Cup career. Well his dad won 200 races, that has to count for something.

By the way, I really despise the term glass ceiling.

At the moment I have no idea how I went from the topic of tear gas to sexism but I did. I'm so damn proud.

Observations from the Window 2.23

Sunday Danica Patrick will be starting the Daytona 500 from the poll position, the fastest qualifier at Daytona with a speed of 196.434 miles per hour, and the world becomes just a little bit better. There was a time I spent nearly every Sunday afternoon watching a race and discussing the fine art of pit stop times with my dad. I don't follow racing as much as I once did, then again I don't spend as much time with my dad as I once did, but I remember watching the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 when she became the first woman to lead that race in her very first trip there. I was watching again in 2008 when she became the first woman to win any IndyCar race.

This will be Patrick's first full season running the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. For the racing novices that is the series where you drive pseudo stock cats by punching the gas and turning to the left for two hours. Sprint Cup racing is the pride of southerners, future southerners, and wannabe southerners the world over.

It has never been easy for Patrick to be taken seriously in the totally male dominated world of auto racing. They always said she was a flash in the pan, that she got so much media attention because of her looks or just because she was a woman. It was never because of her skill as a driver because everybody knows a woman just can't handle a car like a man can. Multiple champion and team owner Richard Petty is the father of my onetime fav driver Kyle and a now sort of the Queen Father of NASCAR. Just last week Petty said this while discussing media coverage of Patrick and her new boyfriend NASCAR rookie Ricky Stenhouse. "It takes away from the racing deal, the stars that really bring the people and the show that brings the people and the people that put on the show. Peyton Place and the racetrack, I keep them separated." I haven't heard if 'King Richard' revised his comments after Patrick won the pole.

So why does it even matter? Five year old Ella Gordon, daughter of driver Jeff Gordon, told her dad she wanted a picture with Patrick in Victory Lane after Patrick won the pole. Jeff Gordon happens to be starting in the front row next to Patrick yet I still wonder who Ella will be cheering for tomorrow. It matters because it's just another way for young girls to see they can do whatever they want to do.

When the flag drops with Danica on the poll the good ole boys in the Daytona infield will be crying in their cans of Budweiser. The confederate flags may still be flying over their tricked out Winnebagos but their world will never be the same.

I like the thought of that.

Observations from the Bar 2.27

I was sitting at the bar watching the first ever Monday Daytona 500 which was also the first one ever run under the lights. This happened because of rain on Sunday which caused me to waste a Sunday afternoon at the bar with nothing to watch until a totally lousy Oscar show Sunday night. All things considered it was a normal race until it wasn't and just became totally bizarre. While the race was under yellow something broke on Juan Pablo Montoya's car causing him to spin up into a truck that was blowing off the track with jet engine, yes jet engine. The crash wrecked the truck's trailer and spilled 200 gallons of jet fuel onto the track which than ignited. While track crews put out the fire and cleaned up the mess the drivers wandered around the track talking as if they were stuck in traffic on the interstate.

I only bothered with that story because it ties in with something I had started writing earlier today. After watching the Oscar show last night I seem to have developed a social media pet peeve.  Anybody who knows me at all or reads this blog knows I have wildly varied interests. Art, politics, and sports constantly fight for space in my mind with other things that are always butting in. On twitter I just post whats on my mind or what I'm reading so you never know what you will get. Sometimes its the same thing for days on end and sometimes I go off in tangents by the hour.

Some people evidently have singular interests and others have accounts to just post on a single subject, both are fine with me. I have no prob with that because they usually have the best info or their subject anyway. What I do have a prob with is when some complain that other people aren't serious enough about the world's problems. I post about gay rights I lose followers, I post about Occupy I lose others, and the gods forbid anybody post about the Academy Awards because all hell breaks loose.

You know the world and its multiple problems are serious enough and we all need to escape now and than. Sometimes that includes watching a totally lame Oscar show and tweeting a photo of a gorgeous Milla Jovovich. Get the fuck over it.

For the record Milla looked totally awesome as does Danica tonight. Now back to racing.
